Many academic studies show that those who learn a second language at an early age have many advantages. Multilingualism promotes, for example, not only cognitive and creative processes, but also leads to better communication skills in the native tongue.
Within a short time our students feel comfortable using English as well as German. This is why we follow the principles of immersion, a concept which comes as close as possible to the natural process of language acquisition. The children approach the “second language” under the guidance of English-speaking role models. With this model students are able to quickly attain the language skills such as writing, comprehension and speaking. These skills increase with age and abilities. Our students develop not only an excellent sense of language but they also expand their view of the world and gain a greater social sensitivity.
In the KIBS primary school classes are taught primarily in English. There are native English teachers from Canada, the USA and the UK. In addition, the subject of German is taught by native German teachers. In the secondary school, the language of instruction depends on the subject teachers. Approximately half of the lessons (History, Biology, Geography, Music, English, Art, Physical Education) are taught in English, the remaining subjects (currently Maths, Science, German and Ethics) are taught in German. Our Spanish and Chinese lessons are also taught by native speakers.
Children who would like to join KIBS in Year 1 take part in a screening process that determines their linguistic and age-appropriate development. Older children will be invited to take part in a three day try-out process after which a decision will be made. We welcome applications throughout the school year.
We are equally accessible for children with German or English language as well as for those with other languages as we offer German and English immersion classes for those new to these languages.
